The sultanate should not
head Islam in Nigeria because it’s a political organisation
–Alhaji Kasum of Afonja
dynasty
Alhaji Olola Kasum is a
social critic and President of the Afonja Descendants Union. In
this interview with SINA FADARE, he speaks about the agony the
Kwarans have passed through in the hands of the Saraki political
dynasty and the tireless efforts being made by the opposition to
put an end to it come 2011.
How will you react to the
recent pronouncement that the Sultan of Sokoto is the leader of
the Muslim and that the office should be rotatory?
In the past before the
enthronement of this current Sultan of Sokoto, I have raised the
issue, though it generated a lot of controversy.
The fact is that the
Sultanate is a political organization because as far as I know
there was no time that the people sat together and made Sultan
their leader.
Their claim was that Jihad
started in 1904, but there were many Islamic organizations within
the communities before that time. We have Idris Aloma from Bornu,
the first to organize pilgrimage to Mecca around 13th
century. If there should be any leadership, at all, it should come
from Bornu.
We have another one called
Shitta Bay Mosque in Lagos. That Mosque was built in 16th century.
It was opened by the Emir of Constantinople. If we want to talk
about which one came first, Bornu and that of Lagos will take
precedence over that of Sokoto.
What was paramount to Sokoto
was the issue of Jihad where many Muslims were killed. That was
when the emirate system started. It is not fair if Sultan lay
claim to the headship of Islamic organization in Nigeria because
there is no constitutional backing for such.
Against the backdrop of the
recent criticism of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, how will
you assess him?
To be fair to Obasanjo, he
came at the critical time of Nigeria as a nation. People may say
he has done nothing. If you look critically you will see that by
the design of the military, the north’s monopoly arrangement was
alarming.
Abacha was able to
re-arrange the military in a way that favoured few cabal in the
north and few of them enjoyed the leadership.
The hierarchy of the
military was seriously monopolized by the North. When Obasanjo,
came, he put sanity to it and things were re-distributed to take
care of all interests.
Obasanjo was a nationalist
who did not want the country to break. The time he came, Nigeria
was at the brink of disintegration. He managed and made
sure that the country did not break.
But when we are talking
about economy, he was a total failure, because the Obasanjo
leadership did not have the capacity to monitor very well and all
our money was looted.
He introduced some few
economic policies but was unable to check the excesses within his
government. Obasanjo, who claimed to be the champion of anti
corruption now ended up as the most corrupt person in Nigeria. He
started Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but
towards the tail end of his tenure, it turned out to be a
mysterious institution terrorizing innocent people. He might have
had good intention of setting it up, but he was power drunk and
used the organization to hunt all his perceived political enemies.
As a Socio critics who
champion the cause of Yoruba kingship in Ilorin, why have you kept
mute despite non actualization of your dream?
Kwara state as you see it
has a serious battle as Yoruba kingship is concerned. The scene is
dominated by the Fulani people to the detriment of the majority.
People felt it was not fair for a minority ethnic group to
dominate the Yoruba who are in the majority. It all started from
history, during the period of Afonja when Alimi, a friend of his
fell out with him and things never remained the same till date .
But the sum of it was that we struggled very hard and tried to
change the status-quo but am sure soonest and not too distant a
future, things will balance up.
How will you assess the last
five years of Governor Bukola in the state?
As far as am concerned,
Bukola has tried his best to change the system as he met it.
Bukola represents a continuation of a political dynasty which is
not democratic. One man controlling the whole system including the
apparatus of government. If you go to the state Assembly, Bukola’s
father single-handed picked the whole 24 members.
The simple truth is that in
the state everywhere you can see the domination of the Saraki
dynasty. This is not fair and it is against the principle of
democracy. There is a need to balance the system and carry other
people along.
You know that Olusola Saraki
has been on the scene for many years and he feels he has the
ultimate power to control Kwarans. But if you look at it
critically Saraki is a product of poor electoral system and since
his dominance in Kwara politics he has perfected ways of
dominating his political environment in order to keep the Fulani
hegemony alive.
But the opposition are
trying very hard to bring a change. I think very soon, things will
change for better.
In the past, the opposition
used to brag that they would effect a change. This has not been
possible in the last 15 years. How do you think this change will
come soon?
I can assure you that Saraki
will not be there as the governor of the state in 2011. Definitely
there will be a wind of change whether the Sarakis like it or not.
The opposition are strongly
working towards this. There is always a time for everything,
Sarakis should be told in a simple language that the hour has come
when the people of kwara will be free from their political grip.
By 2011, by the grace of God
the beautiful political ones will be born in the state. There must
be a change no matter the situation.
Yes, the present system is
very intimidating, harassing and oppressing the opposition by
making sure they whip them in line. This is in-humanity to man
though the situation looks unredeemable, but I can authoritatively
tell you that there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel.
But there is insinuation in
the state that it is the turn of Senator Gbemisola Saraki to be
governor come 2011. How are you going to tackle this?
That is the rumour everybody
is carrying all over, but it is a figment of the imagination of
those who were doing so. The issue of duplicating themselves in
governance has gone, it will not happen again.
I have a strong feeling that
by 2011, Saraki will pack his belongings and go back to Ogun state
his home. I don’t believe in all the political scheming going on.
All that I know is that
there was a time a Saraki came as a slave master to torture the
people of Kwara, and now he is winding up. There will be miracle
which the Kwarans have been dreaming of for many years, it would
happen in 2011 by the grace of God.
But the political antecedent
in the state had not favoured the opposition since 1979. How are
you going to do it this time round?
Every fall has an end; there
must be a beginning and an end. Saraki myth of invisibility
started in 1973 when he came to join politics again. He joined
politics in 1964, but he was defeated. He formed a party then
called "Egbe Omo oni Keke."
He ran away when he was
defeated. He came back in 1973 and he had been using propaganda
effectively to achieve his political desire. People created a myth
round him to make him special. For example there was a myth that
Saraki was habouring a big sore on his leg and that anytime this
sore is infected, his money multiplies. People also believe that
he had a power of disappearance at will.
All these created a
bandwagon effect and people thought Saraki could not be defeated.
But the fact is that after
the Biafra war, he had a lot of money, he made his money in that
war.
He was a contactor to the
military and was in money. He was the one who started money
politics in Kwara. Before his arrival, it was politics of
principle. But he introduced politics of bread and butter and
since then he has been using this strong factor to enslave a lot.
But now, the wind of change
has come because people have seen the mistake of being one of his
bandwagon and am sure in few years time, there will be
re-orientation. His myth has been deflated through Societe
Generale Bank. He would be booted out of Kwara politics by 2011.
