Two night guards were
brutally killed by rampaging armed robbers at Yemetu area of
Ibadan in the early hours of Saturday barely forty-eight hours
after a gang of 14 dare-devil armed robbers stormed three
commercial banks at Idi Ape area of the Oyo state capital
killing about 16 people including four policemen and school
children, and carting away unspecified amount of money in hard
currencies.
In the latest incident,
armed robbers numbering six reportedly attacked the Yemetu
Agip area of Ibadan at about 2:00 a.m. and held hostage
residents of the neighbourhood while the two night guards who
put up resistance were shot dead after initially tying up
their hands. The night guards were named as Bayo Ajayi and
Ganiyu Oyebode.
It was reliably gathered
that the robbers on their arrival held the residents hostage
thus preventing them from seeking instant assistance from the
police.
The Assistant Police
Public Relations Officer for the State Police Command, ASP
Abayomi Adeniji, who confirmed the incident told newsmen that
the robbers broke into some houses and stole away their
properties while the two night guards were killed just as two
other persons also sustained injuries.
‘’The robbers carted
away some unspecified amount of money and several other
valuables from the residents," he stated.
Speaking further, the
police spokesman said: "When our men were later informed, they
went there and combed the whole area and arrested five
suspects in connection with the robbery. They include one
Adegoke and four others. They are currently undergoing
investigations."
A filling station around
the Lead City University near the old Toll Gate was also
attacked by some armed robbers yesterday, where they carted
away unspecified amount of money.
Earlier on Friday, some
robbers similarly attacked a bank at Apata area of Ibadan
where they perpetrated some havocs.
Meanwhile, the men of
the Oyo state Police Command have intensified their
surveillance on the city following the spate of armed robbery
attacks, particularly against commercial banks, in the last
few days more so as the Police Commissioner, Mr. Basiru Azees
has appealed to the citizens of the state to always alert the
Police anytime they suspect any stealthy moves of anybody.
To this end, five
persons were yesterday arrested by plain-clothed Policemen at
Gbagi Tuntun Market area of Ibadan following tip off as they
were sighted loitering around a branch of the First Bank. To
catch the men unawares, the Policemen fired shots into the air
to destabilise the suspects and they promptly arrested them
and took them away for interrogation.
