A detachment of military
and police personnel yesterday took over Umueze Uga community,
Aguata Local Government area of Anambra state, disrupting the
prayer session organized by the community.
The soldiers and
policemen numbering about 200 and who were armed to the teeth,
condoned off the Umumonye community hall, venue of the prayer
session and took position in strategic points in spite of the
court injunction restraining them from interfering with the
programme.
Following the
development, the people who came for the prayer session went
back for fear of being arrested by the combined team of army
and police allegedly invited by the opposition group under the
aegis of Umueze Youth Movement (UYM).
The heavy presence of
the combined army and police was not unconnected with the
alleged report that a group in the community had sworn never
to allow the prayer session to hold as they did not endorse
it.
The Divisional Police
Officer (DPO), in-charge of Aguata Police Station, Mr Samuel
Dang who led the team said that he was only carrying out an
order from "the above".
He could not however
explain why a court order from an Aguata High Court
restraining the police or any other organisation from
interfering in the prayer session, should not be complied
with, he simply told newsmen to see him in the office.
A community leader,
Chief Philip Dim, said that a cabal that has been terrorising
the community over the years should be held responsible for
any catastrophe that may come out of this adding that the
"first ever Umumonye Day" that was aborted by the security
operatives was meant to thank God for the protection and also
raise fund for communal projects.
However, the latest
incident in Uga may not be unconnected with the lingering
crisis over the town union general election in which 38 youths
were arrested by the police when they wanted to disrupt the
election.
