Deregulation is suicidal to Nigeria, says NLC

By AHMED MARI, Maiduguri

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, has described the ongoing deregulation by the Federal Government as suicidal to Nigerians and should be resisted by all means.

The NLC president made the statement when presenting a protest letter to the Borno state Governor, Senator Ali Sheriff, at the Government House, Maiduguri.

Comrade Omar said that despite the protest staged by the NLC in various cities across the country the Federal Government is still going on with the exercise, stressing that NLC would continue to fight for the common man in the country.

He stated that Mr. President himself has admitted that the Electoral Act of the country is faulty and promised to correct it but when the committee brought its recommendation, they removed the most important aspects of the recommendation, pointing out that Nigerians insist on the adoption of the Uwais committee to the letter.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to implement in its totality the recommendation of Justice Uwais committee on electoral reform, adding that the recommendation was based on the views and opinion of Nigerians. He said there will be no credible election in this country without sound electoral rules.

The NLC president also urged the Federal Government to increase the salary of the Nigerian worker from N5,500 to N52,000 monthly, stating that the current minimum wage is inadequate for the needs of Nigerian workers.

He said Nigerian workers earn less than N40 daily in comparison to a councillor who receives N300,000 monthly.

While receiving the letter, Governor Sheriff promised to deliver the letter to Mr. President personally and assured the NLC that President Umaru Yar’Adua would listen to their demands with a view to addressing them.

He urged the Union to be reasonable as there are many problems that government needs to address.
