Uwak regrets Beijing flop
Reigning African Female
Footballer of the Year, Cynthia Uwak, has expressed regret over the
failure of the Super Falcons to win any of their matches at the
Beijing Olympic Games.
She said though the players
put in their best, they were some odds against the team.
"It was a bad outing. We lost
all our matches, but it was not because our opponents outclassed us.
I felt terribly bad that in spite of our efforts, we could not
utilize our chances. That was what made the difference in all the
matches we played," she said.
Uwak exonerated herself from
any blame for the no-goal appearance by the Falcons, saying, it was
a collective effort. If we had won, I would not have taken the glory
alone. We all did our best. But I think we really need to work
harder so that, we would overcome this type of performance at the
world level. All the same, it was another experience which would
help us in future," she said.
She described as frustrating
the experience to stay longer than necessary at the Games village
after the crashing of the team from the competition.
"I was frustrated. I spent
five days at the camp waiting to return to my base in Finland . The
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) told me to wait that they were
trying to get a flight for me. I was bored by the whole thing. I
needed to go back. I had no business remaining in Beijing; after all
we had lost out. It was painful remaining in the camp when I should
have gone back to continue with my work in Finland," she said.
