Coaches invade Enyimba

By George ALUO

BARELY one week after announcing their desire to go for new coaches, Enyimba have been invaded by coaches who are interested in joining the club.

Last week, Enyimba boss Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu confirmed in an exclusive interview with Sporting Champion that the club are shopping for replacement for the duo of Daniel Amokachi and Aloy Agu who have since been snatched by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) to serve as assistant coaches of Super Eagles.

The Enyimba chairman said they are not however in a hurry to hire the new coaches since their target is to bring on board coaches with "credible track record."

Sporting Champion investigations revealed that Anyansi already has in his possession hundreds of applications from coaches, most of whom have resorted to using different lobby groups to get the job.

"As I talk to you, interested coaches have simply invaded the club," our source stated.

We further gathered that the Enyimba management wants to finish prosecuting the on-going Coca Cola FA Cup before taking a decision on the coaches issue.

The Peoples Elephants will this weekend battle Ocean Boys in the semi-final of the FA Cup at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. Enyimba have been using the domestic competition to prepare for the continental battle which resumes next month, with an away clash against Al-Hilal of Sudan in Omdurman.

Agogo not for Africa

GYPTIAN giants Zamalek have withdrawn their lucrative offer for Ghana striker Junior Agogo.

A source close the Zamalek board has told Ghanasoccernet that they will look elsewhere for a replacement for the Ghanaian forward. The five-time African champions are furious that one week at the Nottingham Forest forward agreed to the deal after a meeting and he has still not signed the contract.

Zamalek are keen to return to the top of continental football and offered a record deal to Agogo in the quest to conquer Africa once again and play at the FIFA Club World Cup. The Black stars striker is to be eyeing a deal in Dubai which has so far not been tabled and unlikely to be made.

The Egyptians, who have brought in former AC Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni to oversee the revolution at club, are angry that despite the incentives given to Agogo he is still dragging his feet.

Agogo could end up staying with English side Nottingham Forest for the foreseeable future if the deal of Egypt slips through his fingers. A German second division club and a Turkish side, who have both expressed interest in Agogo, have offered by far less wages and could not even meet the transfer demands of Nottingham.

At 29, Zamalek will offer him high level competition than the league in Dubai as well as giving him best offer he has received in his career. With age catching up on Agogo, few clubs in Europe are ready to risk buying him.

ASEC win venue war

AFTER a string of poor runs at their Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, ASEC Mimosas have succeeded in getting the nod of Confederation of African Football (CAF) to change the venue of their home matches, ahead of the epic battles of the group stage of the MTN/CAF Champions League.

The top Ivorien club, it will be noted, could not win a match at home during the preliminary rounds of the money spinning competition, but still managed to scrap through to the mini-league stage, courtesy of their superlative showings away.

Sporting Champion scooped that ASEC, apparently scared that they are under a spell at the magnificent Houphouet Boigny Stadium resolved to do everything possible to get CAF approve a new home ground for them, before the mini-league stage gets under way early next month.

The club which have since last mouth tabled a request for a change of venue, early this week got CAF’s nod to play at the compact Robert Champroux Stadium, a venue which boasts of an artificial turf.

A source close to ASEC disclosed that supporters of the club have since embarked on a thorough spiritual cleansing of the stadium where they are sure the likes of Ahly and Zamalek will fall when they come calling.

CAF, however, in a release stated that their decision to allow ASEC play outside their Houphouet Boigny ground had to do with the fact that the arena needs to undergo renovation ahead of next year’s African Nations championship, which Cote d’Ivoire is hosting.

ASEC are billed to open their CAF Champions League campaign against Dynamos of Zimbabwe away in Harare. To qualify for the group stage, ASEC forced Moroccan side Olympique Khourigba to a 1-1 draw away, after first leg at home in Abidjan ended goalless.
