THIS year’s Governor Isa
Yuguda Wrestling championship has been fixed to hold from September
24-30 in Bauchi.
President of the Nigeria
Amateur Wrestling Federation (NAWF), Austin Edeze who disclosed this
in a chat with Sports Champion said that the championship
which hitherto was for wrestlers in the 19 northern states of the
country will now include wrestlers from other part of the country as
the championship has been made a national event.
He assured that the wrestling
federation is determined to ensure that amateur wrestlers in the
country are given opportunities to compete in more national
championship to gain exposure as well as to be competitive ready at
any given time.
"Part of our plans is to
ensure that our wrestlers compete in at least four national
championships a year as it will help in the discovery of hidden
talents and as well as keep our wrestlers busy for international
competitions," he said.
Edeze who scored the
federation high in their performance so far this year, called on
other states government to borrow a leaf from the Bauchi state
governor and the former Ebonyi state governor, Sam Egwu for
supporting the growth of amateur wrestling in the country.
"We’re talking with other
states willing to host any of our national championship to come
forward and make it realistic for the good of the sport in
Nigeria’," he added.
Meanwhile the 4th
edition of Dr. Sam Egwu National Championship would hold later in
Abakaliki.
